Well folks, I haven’t posted in a few rounds…but that doesn’t mean I haven’t continued to follow and throw in my two-cents.
I guess this post is more for the C9 players, who in all likelihood won’t even read this once the season ends. C’est la vie.
(But also the rest of the VL should feel free to chime in here.)
All this preamble to really just celebrate what’s been (from the viewing perspective) an exciting and rather unpredictable season. Each round from the f7/f8 onward has brought some sort of intrigue. I could go on down the line. The commonality?—each person went down swinging, just trying to see another day in the game. I think Austin perhaps embodied this trait the most…he always seemed to have some plan up his sleeve, I know I thought Austin was going to keep figuring out how to survive until the very end.
I wish I had the time (well, I do have the time but I’m lazy) to satisfyingly eulogize each person from f8 onward. I’ll just briefly mention that it’s been a commendable effort to watch, and the emotion/passion showed from the C9ers has been phenomenal.
Despite rooting for Nick/Jenn since the early days of the game, I will admit that I was one who also thought the Nick/Jenn hype train all season needed to slow its roll a bit. Quite frankly I was wrong, and I tip my hat to them. To have a Jeff Probst moment and harp on theme of the season ("Who Can You Trust?"), it just seems poetic that the two people who embodied this theme from the get-go were able to make it to F3.
Credit where credit is due: this is Nick and Jenn’s season, without a doubt. The hype is real, absolutely warranted, and much deserved. To go from the bottom on OG Carex to slaying everyone—as the most obvious pair in the game—is nothing short of remarkable. Nick/Jenn’s social game was (from the outside looking in) by far the best, to the point where other people were fine with taking a shot going with this pair to the end game, even if it meant Nick/Jenn would potentially go on to win instead. Not to mention they reeled off clutch immunity wins down the stretch.
I do feel bad tying Nick’s game and Jenn’s game together so closely, because as individuals they both excelled this season and to that end they deserve praise for what they did in the game as individuals.
Nick getting 3rd and just falling short of FTC reminded me a lot of me in my first skype game. Being the one who gets left at the alter is perhaps the toughest pill to swallow in a game, but Nick should be proud of how well he played. We all know how tough it is to come in as a newbie, and Nick made the game look really easy at times.
At this point it sounds like Jenn will win the season, and IMO such an outcome would represent the season well. From climbing out of an early hole to setting herself up perfectly in the end game, Jenn crushed it and her story is a good one.
I think Steffen deserves due-praise as well. Steffen has thoroughly entertained me as a character all season…and it’s only fitting that he will match placements with his one-true love and everyone's favorite conquest alum, do I even need to say the name? I think Steffen ultimately deserves a bit more credit than he’s likely to get at FTC, as I think he too has a solid underdog story. And I don’t blame Steffen one bit for choosing Nick/Jenn to go to f3 with.
Anyway, that's all I've got. I know this was fairly short.
I tried to keep my commentary positive and not super critical all season, as I'm aware of how brutal it can be to finish up a game and see your gameplay get mercilessly dragged by people who only see a fraction of what's really going on. C9ers, you all did great and this was fun season to view.
Peace and love,
Nick
